Hells Kitchen

Here we have the apartment of a young couple living in a one-bedroom in Hell’s Kitchen. They just moved in and would love to get comments with ideas on artwork and window coverings that help add color to a lot of dark furniture…while maintaining a look that is neither too feminine nor too masculine.

A light colored rug would open this room up a lot. Great view!

I’d put some shears on the window to warm up and soften the cold windows, especially at night. You can pull them back when you want the view.

A picture or some wall hanging above the couch will go along way to bringing in some life. The big space will feel designed rather than just empty.

What’s the green thing in the bottom right? Is there another seating area there?

Yeah, congrats on that great view.

Beautiful view…
The apt looks very nice, but I would add some color. Art of the wall would give the room an instant facelift. I might even delete the arm chair out of the equation and just keep the couch…A colorful rug would be the perfect final touch…

Um, I think that’s my old apartment. Is it West 51st Street between 8th and 9th? Anyone? Bueller?

Paint! Paint! Paint! Cheapest and easiest way to dress up an apartment. You can just do an accent wall behind the couch, or the whole room. And I’d recommend a mirror over the couch to open up the space visually.

It’s a shame your furniture is pointed at the TV, when the view is so gorgeous.

Marimekko has great fabrics that you can stretch on a frame and hang as art work. Inexpensive and very easy to do.

How about painting the ceiling a high gloss white and the walls a warmer naples yellow? Add a large braided cotton rug in shades of green, blue and orange. Some colorful throw pillows. A mirror or painting that you love above the sofa. Love the Marimekko idea. Neutral gauze curtains you can leave open. Move the torchiere to the right corner nook, replacing the table and vase. At the other end of the couch, a brass pharmacy lamp. Books and magazines on the leather stool next to the television. Some hyacinths in clay pots on the shelf under the window. Marvelous view!

Great start with the dining chairs, couch color, flooring, and coffee table chest. Suggestions:
- big carpet (modern or Persian)
- big marimekko, big unique mirror, or shelves displaying art/photos above couch
- more lighting, e.g. short unique lamps or track lighting (can be done externally plugging into an outlet)

I’m assuming that there’s an long wall opposite the couch. Do an entire wall of bookcases with closed shelves at the bottom, maybe some drawers for storage. That gets the TV out of the way of the doors.
Add a valance — in a blue plaid or a stripe — across the top to unify the windows and doors, with matchstick blinds on both.
Move floor lamp to other side of couch and add a small table for a table lamp.
Definitely need a bigger rug to add color and warm up space.
Accessorize with pillows that pick up the colors in the valance and the rug.
A large mirror over the couch will make the space look larger.
Consider a smaller dining table with chairs that can be used in the living room area for extra seating. A rectangular table with drop leaves that can be placed against the wall for 2 and then pulled out for company will also open up the space.

Dump the antique TV and get a flatscreen. Get a Budweiser beer light. A very large portrait of Charles Manson a la Andy Warhol would look good over the sofa. A female Negro mannequin in a Santa Claus suit would be a nice accent piece over by the window and will serve to keep wall-climbing crackheads out. A collection of duck decoys is always a nice touch.

I think you should remove the big chair and open it up a bit more…Get a nice rug, great, colorful artwork and some drapes for the sliding door…It will instantly boost the apt…It’s all a good start though…
